Get Started
On this page, you’ll find a comprehensive guide for getting your insurance producer license. We’ll walk you through the process, and we’ll be here to answer any questions you have along the way.
The Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI) requires each person selling insurance in the state to hold an insurance license. You will choose which line of authority you want to be licensed in: health insurance, life insurance, property and casualty insurance, or any combination of those lines.
Once you know which license you need, you’re ready to begin. In Wisconsin, there are 4 steps to getting your insurance license.
Step 1: Complete a Prelicensing Course
If you want to become a licensed insurance agent in Wisconsin, you must complete an approved line of prelicensing education. A.D. Banker offers prelicensing courses that will prepare you to successfully pass the state exam on your first attempt. We offer online courses that can be supplemented with web classes and learning tools like flashcards and study manuals.
The State of Wisconsin requires potential agents (intermediaries) to complete 20 hours of prelicensing education for most license types before attempting the state exam. The specific hour requirements are as follows:
- Life – 20 hours
- Accident & Health – 20 hours
- Property – 20 hours
- Casualty – 20 hours
- Personal Lines – 20 hours
- Navigator – 16 hours
To satisfy the requirements for your course, you will need to pass a Certification Exam. The Certification Exam must be monitored by a disinterested third party that is not a friend, family member, or any financial connection to you. After passing the Certification Exam with a 70% or greater, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. Keep this certificate—you will need it to be admitted to your state exam. The Certificate of Completion is valid for 1 year. You must complete this step before taking your state exam; if you pass the state exam prior to course completion, you will be required to retest with PSI.
Step 2: Get Fingerprinted
Wisconsin requires fingerprint impressions from all unlicensed applicants using Fieldprint Wisconsin. When you register, you will need to enter the Fieldprint code (not case sensitive): FPWIOCIInsurance.
Step 3: Pass a Licensing Exam
After you finish your prelicensing course, you are now ready to take the state licensing exam. You must score 70% or higher to pass your state licensing exam. You will be required to pay an additional exam fee if you retake it, so it is important to pass the test the first time.
Step 4: Apply for Your License
After passing the exam, you are ready to apply for your license through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) and pay the application fee. You must submit your license application within 12 months of passing the exam, or you will be required to retake it.
Step 5: Plan for Continuing Education
Continuing education (CE) is required for all Wisconsin insurance agents for license renewal. The continuing education requirements for resident licenses are generally 24 hours every 2 years, including 3 hours of ethics training. There are additional requirements to sell certain products, such as annuities and long-term care. Newly licensed agents are exempt during the first reporting period.
Nonresident license holders are currently required to adhere to their home state continuing education requirements.
It’s important to stay on top of any changes to Wisconsin insurance statutes and continuing education requirements, which can be found on the Wisconsin Department of Insurance website.
